David Almond – Skellig

I don’t think I ever would’ve come across this book if it hadn’t been for a recommendation from Nick Hornby in his recent Stuff I’ve Been Reading collection. It’s largely aimed at young adults but it certainly proved a most worthwhile and enjoyable few hours for myself.

It follows a young boy whose family have just moved house and whose sister is extremely ill in hospital. While this is going on the boy finds a strange creature hiding out in the garage of the house. His only confidant in all this is his new neighbout, a homeschooled girl well versed in the work of William Blake. It’s a beautiful novel and not difficult to see why it gained so many accolades and awards upon its publication.
